Overview
Confirmed Jason Duval is one of the two playable leads of Grand Theft Auto VI, alongside Lucia Caminos. Rockstar sums him up as a man who wants an easy life and keeps finding it harder. He grew up among grifters and crooks, did a stint in the Army, and now runs jobs for drug smugglers in the Leonida Keys.
Reported Previewers say players can switch between the two at any time, and that their bond is a system of its own.
Key facts
- Confirmed First seen: Trailer 1, December 4, 2023.
- Confirmed Home: one of Brian Heder’s properties, rent-free, in exchange for help with local shakedowns and the odd visit for Lori’s sangria.
- Confirmed Friend: Cal Hampton, who also works with Brian.
- Confirmed Sidearm: the Girardi ES9 pistol, with a personalized, engraved version in the Ultimate Edition.
- Confirmed Wheels: a well-worn, low-riding Vapid Ganado pickup. The Ultimate Edition adds a Retro Build kit for it, an Army fatigue-colored Dinka Enduro and a Crest Kayak.
- Confirmed Official lines: one promises to be right behind someone if anything happens, the other shrugs off another day in paradise.
Background
Confirmed Rockstar’s bio draws Jason as a product of his surroundings: crooks and con artists while he was growing up, then the Army as an attempt to leave a troubled adolescence behind. He ended up in the Keys at the only trade he knows, and the bio hints it may be time for a change.
Confirmed Meeting Lucia, Rockstar says, could be the best or the worst thing ever to happen to him, and he cannot yet tell which. The official synopsis has the two leaning on each other after an easy score goes wrong.
Brian’s boat yard
On screen Two official stills put Jason squarely in Brian’s world. At a bar with Cal he nurses a Logger Beer in a trucker cap printed “Brian’s Boat Works & Marina”, and in a night shot he and Cal carry duffel bags past a wall sign with the same name. Confirmed That is the boat yard Brian’s bio says he still moves product through.
On screen A third still shows Jason with a pistol drawn beside a seaplane at dusk. Our read Only the ends of the words on its fuselage show (“…’s” and “…rina”), which fits the Boat Works & Marina name but does not prove it.
In the trailers
- On screen Trailer 1: Jason and Lucia hold up a liquor store together, a $14.99 price sign visible at 1:08.4.
- On screen Trailer 2: Jason drives with Lucia at 1:37.5, and the two go to the NINE1NINE nightclub together (its roped-off entrance at 1:39.7).
In the Extended Look
Reported Sportskeeda notes that Rockstar’s 26-minute Extended Look follows Jason more than Lucia. On screen His moments, checked on our frames:
| Time | What Jason does |
|---|---|
| 02:22 to 03:10 | Collects for Boobie Ike from Raymond, who makes them wait |
| 04:20 to 04:34 | Fires a long gun during the escape from an apartment building |
| 05:15 | With Lucia, recognizes the officer leading the raid, Méndez, from the elevator |
| 05:24 to 05:58 | Flees with Lucia through an occupied apartment and out of a window |
| 06:24 to 06:56 | Brings clothes to the bedroom as the pair get ready for cocktails with Brian |
| 07:09 | Gets a door prompt: HURRY on circle, LUCIA on L2 |
| 07:14 to 07:24 | Opens the fridge: Logger Beer, Lavazas Beer and Blitz smoothies with stamina and focus icons |
| 08:00 to 08:17 | Leaves home with Lucia in a red convertible |
| 08:22 to 08:44 | Says in the car that they need Brian to introduce them to a new contact, Brian’s old cellmate |
| 13:48 to 14:02 | Takes a gun from Raul Bautista and moves to the back seat to hold off the pursuit |
| 18:40 to 18:49 | Both leads’ portraits appear as control switches mid-chase |
| 19:08 to 19:36 | Is briefed by Valentina on guarding Andrés de León |
| 22:11 to 22:50 | Finds Andrés in the 24th-floor conference room and fails to bring him down for the speech |
| 23:22 to 23:48 | Fights through unfinished rooms while messages warn of danger elsewhere |
| 24:19 | Reports over the radio that one of the attackers has Andrés |
| 25:11 to 25:26 | Uses focus in an office firefight, enemies highlighted in blue |
| 25:52 | Fishes from a boat with Lucia and Brian |
On screen In the opening shootout, Lucia fights beside him under the game’s control, takes cover and answers when he calls for covering fire. At home he waits for her to get ready, picks drinks and watches parody commercials. Reported Engadget spotted a TV ad with boars and deer at 7:45, and an r/GTA6 thread matched its scenery to a Red Dead Redemption 2 location.
Relationship with Lucia
Reported According to TGG, who was flown to Rockstar North and watched developers play for about two hours, a relationship system tracks Jason and Lucia and can go up or down. Texting, dates and even gym sessions together raise it, the two can hold hands while roaming, and police remember whether Jason was seen with Lucia.
Reported El Rubius, who watched nearly three hours, saw Lucia fly off in a stolen helicopter after a heist, leaving Jason to text her asking whether she had forgotten something. Abandoning a partner in a shootout can make them angry, he says, and the relationship later affects how cooperative and efficient they are on heists.
Reported Red Bull’s coverage adds that the strength of the relationship changes the story’s course and its ending, and a magazine feature quoted in an r/GTA6 thread says their choices can carry deeper repercussions than the honor systems of Rockstar’s earlier games.
What previews reported
- Reported Hunting: TGG asked Rob Nelson about fishing. The answer, relayed in an r/GTA6 thread, was catch and release only, with hunting paying money through a character Jason knows.
- Reported Criminal Profile: PC Gamer and IBTimes UK say Jason and Lucia each keep a separate Criminal Profile, from Professional down to a permanent Shattered state.
Looks and style
Confirmed The Vintage Vice City Pack gives Jason a pastel linen suit and a 1980s cut. In the Ultimate Edition, Sara’s Unisex Salon adds facial hair styles (an official still shows him with a mullet), and an Electric Fang Tattoo still shows a large piece covering most of his back.
On screen A screenshot added on August 31 shows him with long, swept-back hair and a Chacer’s cup, driving Lucia.
What players spotted
- Reported An r/GTA6 thread counted 29 new screenshots on Rockstar’s site at the end of August. Confirmed Rockstar’s media page now carries 13 stills of Jason and Lucia together.
- Reported On September 18 another thread reported a new Jason artwork, a poster exclusive to Target’s vinyl edition of the game’s album.
- Reported A thread wondered whether Jason keeps his house all game, since the story comes in chapters. Confirmed Rockstar’s Ultimate Edition text does mention chapters.
Our read
Our read Jason is the insider and Lucia the newcomer with a plan. His ties run through Brian, Lori and Cal, and most of the Extended Look from 06:24 to 11:12 is his home life and Brian’s circle. The reported relationship system matters more to him than switching ever did to GTA V’s leads: Lucia is a partner he can hold hands with, leave behind or anger.
On screen A weathered stilt house appears beside a basketball shot at 17:12, and Jason’s Ultimate Edition safehouse is one too. Our read Rockstar has not said whether either is the Extended Look’s home, with its shared bedroom and flamingo-mural kitchen, or which is the Brian property of the bio.
Questions
Who is Jason’s landlord? Confirmed Brian Heder, the old-school smuggler who runs a boat yard with his third wife, Lori. Jason pays no rent and helps with shakedowns instead.
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia? On screen The Extended Look switches mid-chase (18:40 to 18:49). Reported Previewers say you can switch at any time and roam as a pair.
Who voices Jason? Reported Rockstar has not published a cast list. The only cast member on the record is Stephen Root, who told Vice he plays Brian Heder.
