Méndez

Overview

On screen Méndez leads the police raid that opens the Extended Look. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are collecting a package from Raymond when the police storm the building, and from the elevator the pair recognize the officer in charge by name (05:15). They hope he did not see them.

On screen He first appeared in Trailer 2, in a close-up around 1:48: slicked-back hair, a mustache, sport glasses and a POLICE vest over a striped shirt.

Key facts

• On screen The warning (03:33): Raymond’s partner Ernesto calls to say that their friends on the task force are on their way and to let them take whatever they want.
• On screen The raid (04:06): police burst in shouting for everyone to freeze.
• On screen Recognized (05:15): Jason and Lucia name him on sight.
• Reported Force: the Vice City Police Department, according to GTA Wiki, which reads it off his badge.

In the Extended Look

On screen As the raid sweeps the floor, a voice asks whether they cannot handle a bunch of street pushers (05:02). A cornered man shouts that his gun is not even loaded and gets “Aww, too bad!” in reply (05:06 to 05:07), and the order comes to clean up (05:11).

Reported GTA Wiki attributes those lines to Méndez and says he shoots the surrendering man.

On screen Jason and Lucia watch from the elevator. One of them names Méndez, the other asks whether he saw them, and the answer is that he could not have (05:15 to 05:20).

In Trailer 2

On screen Méndez appears around 1:46 to 1:49 of Trailer 2, in a green-lit building in a POLICE vest. Our frame review matched that shot to the raid in the Extended Look, where the same surroundings carry more detail.

Reported GTA Wiki quotes him in the trailer telling another officer that cops have to protect each other.

Our read

Our read Ernesto calls the task force “our friends” and tells Raymond to let them take what they want, which reads like a unit that takes from the crews it raids rather than one that arrests them. The pair knowing Méndez by sight, and hoping not to be seen, points to a history with him that the footage does not explain.
