Cal Hampton

Overview

Confirmed Cal Hampton is Jason Duval’s friend and, like Jason, an associate of Brian Heder. His official tagline wonders what would happen if everything on the internet were true.

Confirmed Cal feels safest at home, with a few beers, some private browser tabs and a radio tuned to Coast Guard traffic. Rockstar places him at America’s low tide and says he is happy there. His casual paranoia enjoys company, but Jason has bigger plans than he does.

• Confirmed Circle: Jason’s friend and one of Brian’s associates.
• Confirmed Habits: snooping on Coast Guard communications, beer, private browsing.
• Confirmed Official lines: one complains that far too many birds fly around in perfect formation, and another tells you the psychopaths are running things and you should get used to it.

In official screenshots

On screen Cal appears in all four of his own stills and in two of Jason’s:

• On screen Floating on a pink flamingo inflatable in a pool, can in hand, with more cans bobbing around him, one of them Fizzazz.
• On screen At a mini golf course dressed with fake alligators, a putter over his shoulder, in a bucket hat and a green floral shirt.
• On screen Holding a can at a crowded bar while Jason lines up a shot at the pool table.
• On screen Looking through binoculars from a boat while Jason fishes.
• On screen At a bar beside Jason, a Patriot Beer at his elbow, while Jason holds a Logger Beer and wears a Brian’s Boat Works & Marina cap.
• On screen Walking beside Jason at night past a wall sign for Brian’s Boat Works & Marina, both carrying duffel bags. Cal’s T-shirt reads “Violence Is Cool! Thanks Videogame’s” over a cartoon of a girl playing a video game.

Our read The binoculars fit a man who listens in on the Coast Guard for fun: Cal looks like the crew’s lookout. The duffel bags at the boat yard say he does more for Brian than keep Jason company.

In the Extended Look

Reported Red Bull’s coverage of the Extended Look mentions Cal in the background of a pool scene. Our read We have not matched him to a timestamp on our own frames, so we cannot yet say how long he is on screen.

Our read

Our read Cal is comic relief with a use. A paranoid man with a radio scanner and binoculars is exactly who a small smuggling crew wants watching the water, and his line about Jason’s bigger plans suggests the two friends will pull in different directions as Jason’s story grows.

Our read His video game slogan T-shirt is Rockstar poking fun at the old debate over violent games, worn by a character who spends his free time online.
