Key facts

The personalized ES9

On screen Rockstar’s Personalized Weapon Variants screenshot lays the two pistols on the stone edge of a pool at night, a palm tree’s shadow on the water. The ES9 is black, with a threaded muzzle, an accessory rail under the barrel and “J.DUVAL” engraved on the slide, and its side carries the warnings “Read manual before use” and “Fires without magazine”. On screen The grip panel is engraved with a scroll reading “Sua Sponte”, and “JD” is cut into the base of the grip. A money clip of $100 bills, a single cartridge and a candle sit beside the guns.

Sua Sponte

Our read “Sua Sponte” is Latin for “of their own accord” and the motto of the US Army Rangers. Confirmed Rockstar’s bio says Jason joined the Army to get away from a troubled adolescence. Our read So the engraving reads as a nod to his service. The pistol’s outline also follows the Beretta 92 family, which served the US Army as the M9, a fitting sidearm for a veteran. Rockstar has not said what inspired it.

Jason’s pistol in the stills

On screen In one of Jason’s official screenshots he holds a black pistol against the fuselage of a silver seaplane at a marina. Our read Its outline matches the engraved ES9, though no markings are readable.

Guns in the Extended Look

On screen The Extended Look’s wheel has two tabs, Weapons and Items, switched with R1 (about 17:52). On screen Jason’s gunfights in the video include a long gun fired during the apartment escape (about 04:20), a firearm Raul Bautista hands him during a police chase (about 13:48) and an office firefight in which an enemy is highlighted in blue under focus (about 25:11).

What previews reported

Reported According to the r/GTA6 summary of TGG’s Rockstar North preview, there is no more auto aim, only aim assist, and kills can trigger kill cams like those in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Max Payne. Reported TGG says focus slows time and reveals weak points on people and vehicles, and that police know what weapons you are holding. Reported Engadget reports red markers for lethal hits and yellow ones for disarming hits, and a quick swap between two guns.

Reported Not everyone likes the new wheel: a fan redesign that made it circular drew more than 5,500 upvotes on r/GTA6.

Our read

Our read The ES9 is the most personal gun Rockstar has shown: Jason’s name on the slide, his initials on the grip and an Army motto on the panel. Our read We expect the plain ES9 to be his standard sidearm in every edition, with the engraving as the Ultimate Edition extra.
