Deer

Overview

Confirmed Rockstar describes Mount Kalaga National Park as a national landmark against Leonida’s northern border, with prime hunting, fishing and off-road trails. Its official stills include a cougar stalking a herd of deer drinking from a stream.

On screen That still is the only look at deer in Leonida so far.

Key facts

• Confirmed Where: Mount Kalaga National Park, in the north of Leonida.
• On screen Herd: four deer at the stream, among them an antlered buck lying down.
• On screen Predator: a cougar wading in from the left of the frame.
• Confirmed Hunting: Rockstar lists hunting among the park’s draws.

The official still

On screen At the edge of a shaded stream, one deer lowers its head to drink while two more stand and graze on the sandy bank behind it. An antlered buck rests on the ground to the right. None of them has noticed the cougar creeping through the shallows in the foreground.

Our read Their pale rumps and the buck’s antlers read as white-tailed deer.

Hunting

On screen Another Mount Kalaga still shows two hunters walking through tall grass under the pines with rifles, one in a hunter-orange tank top and the other in camouflage overalls. Confirmed Rockstar describes it as two people holding rifles walking side by side through the woods.

Reported According to an r/GTA6 thread relaying TGG’s question to Rob Nelson of Rockstar, hunting earns money through a character Jason knows, while fishing is catch and release only.

Our read Rockstar has not said which animals can be hunted, but deer and hunters share the same park in its stills.

Deer on TV

Reported Engadget spotted an in-game TV ad with boars and deer at 7:45 in the Extended Look. An r/GTA6 thread matched its scenery to a Red Dead Redemption 2 location, and commenters took it for reused footage from that game.

Our read So the ad says nothing about which animals live in Leonida.

The real animal

Reported The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the endangered Key deer, the smallest subspecies of the North American white-tailed deer, lives only in the lower Florida Keys and nowhere else in the world. Its refuge was set up in 1957, and the deer was listed as endangered in 1967.

Our read Rockstar has shown deer only in the northern park so far. Nothing yet puts Key deer on the islands of the Leonida Keys.
