Confirmed Two official screenshots of the Leonida Keys feature green iguanas. In Rockstar’s own description of one, an iguana walks in front of a mobility scooter as people pass by in the background.

On screen The second, one of the newer stills on Rockstar’s media page, is a close-up of an iguana basking on a rock at the water’s edge, a small palm-covered island behind it and birds overhead.

• On screen The basking iguana: the close-up frames the lizard against the sea, its spiny crest lit by the sun and its orange eye turned toward the camera.

Our read An iguana holding up traffic is the kind of local detail Rockstar builds Leonida from. Neither still shows how iguanas behave when a player gets close.

The real animal

Reported The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says green iguanas are not native to Florida and are treated as an invasive species because of their impact on native wildlife. Their native range runs from Central America to tropical South America and some eastern Caribbean islands, and Florida has added them to its prohibited species list.

Reported The FWC also notes that when temperatures drop to near freezing, iguanas can fall into a torpor, lose muscle control and even drop out of trees.
