Overview

Confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI has two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

On screen In the Extended Look both character portraits appear on screen during an active chase (18:40 to 18:49), the clearest sign yet of switching between them.

Reported Red Bull’s coverage of the Extended Look says players can switch between Jason and Lucia at any time, that the two stay in touch by chat, and that the strength of their relationship affects the course of the story and its ending.

What the Extended Look shows

  • On screen Mid-chase (18:40 to 18:49): both portraits appear during a chase.
  • On screen The partner under AI control: in the opening shootout Lucia moves with Jason, takes cover, fires at the police and answers when he calls for cover.
  • On screen One job, two floors (23:22 to 24:27): at the Megamundo job, where Lucia is introduced as part of the security detail, the two fight on different floors of the same building and keep in touch. Lucia slips through a guarded interior after Jason creates a distraction.
  • On screen Home life: at 07:09 a door prompt offers LUCIA on L2 next to HURRY on circle while Jason waits for her to get ready.

Together or apart

Reported TGG, who watched developers play at Rockstar North, describes a relationship system between Jason and Lucia that can go up or down. Texting each other, going on dates and even going to the gym together raise it, and the two can hold hands while roaming together.

Reported El Rubius, who watched nearly three hours of the game, saw Lucia fly off in a stolen helicopter and leave Jason behind after a heist, and Jason text her: “Hey, aren’t you forgetting something?” He says leaving a partner behind during a shootout can make them angry, and that the relationship later affects how cooperative and efficient they are during heists.

Reported A reply in an r/GTA6 thread (August 30, 9,460 points) says El Rubius called Lucia during the session and took her for a drive and a walk to the beach, with conversations along the way. The thread’s poster argued that the bigger change is that Jason and Lucia can be together all the time, where GTA V’s leads mostly lived separate lives outside missions.

Reported A magazine feature quoted in an r/GTA6 thread on August 26 says the couple’s choices “can have repercussions that cut much deeper than Rockstar’s previous titles or ‘honour’ systems that reward conscientious game playing”.

Separate records

Reported PC Gamer and IBTimes UK report that Jason and Lucia each keep their own Criminal Profile, and TGG says police remember whether you were with Lucia.

Our read

Our read Switching in GTA 6 looks less like GTA V’s jump between three separate lives and more like steering a couple who share a home, a car and the consequences. The helicopter text is the best example so far: the game noticed one lead leaving the other behind and made the other one say so. Which of the two you bring to a job may matter as much as which one you play.
