Its faded sign offers to rent, buy, sell and trade video games, plus snacks, and every other sign on it says the business is over: “Bank Owned”, “Store Closing!” and a handwritten card reading “Closing Down, Everything Half Price”.

Key facts

In the Extended Look

On screen The shop is part of the stretch that begins at 17:51.5, when the item wheel opens over a parked red convertible in front of the strip mall. The Items tab shows a red bandana set to Off, pink sunglasses and Rod’s Racing Cap, and two money readouts, $15,150 and $700, sit on screen at 17:51.6.

On screen At 17:53 the three shopfronts fill the screen. Video Forever’s blinds are drawn behind its signs. Next door, Zekes Gadgets advertises repairs and massive reductions, and the Casa de Empeño pawn and jewelry shop on the right offers instant cash for gold, silver, diamonds and watches, “Open 7 Days”. At 18:00 Lucia walks up to the Zekes door with the bandana over her face.

Our read

Our read Video Forever is two eras of games retail on one sign: a rental store of the Blockbuster years that also buys, sells and trades games the way GameStop does. Now bank owned and selling off its fittings, it is a joke about a dead business model. With a repair shop cutting prices next door and a pawn shop offering instant cash, the strip mall matches Rockstar’s line about Port Gellhorn’s “empty strip malls”, but the Extended Look never names the town.
