GTA 6 PlayStation ad in Australia carries an X 18+ badge, a rating no game can get
An Ultimate Edition pre-order ad from the PlayStation Store, shared on r/GTA6, shows Australia's X 18+ Restricted mark. X18+ is a film category: the highest rating a game can get in Australia is R18+.
Overview
On screen An ad for Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition from the PlayStation Store, shared on r/GTA6 on Tuesday, September 29, carries Australia’s “X 18+ Restricted” classification badge in its bottom right corner. Reported The post that shared it, by u/Familiar_Gur_347, is titled “Grand Theft Auto VI will be rated X 18+ in Australia as per PS ad.”
Confirmed X18+ is not a rating a video game can receive in Australia. It is a category for films only, and the highest classification open to a computer game is R18+. A game with content beyond R18+ is Refused Classification, which means it “cannot be shown, sold, hired or distributed” in the country, as the Arts Law Centre of Australia puts it.
Key facts
- On screen The ad: “Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition”, “Pre-order from PlayStation Store”, with an X 18+ Restricted badge.
- Confirmed X18+: restricted to adults, and in the Arts Law Centre’s words for films that contain “real depictions of actual sexual activity between consenting adults.”
- Confirmed Highest rating for games: R18+. Anything above it is Refused Classification.
- Reported GTA 6’s Australian rating: no final rating has been announced. GTA V was rated R18+.
- Confirmed Age checks: since March 9, 2026, online gaming platforms in Australia must check a player’s age before giving access to games classified R18+.
What the ad shows
On screen The picture is a square PlayStation Store ad in the store’s blue. The PlayStation Store logo sits at the top, then a small “igta” wordmark, the title “Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition” and the line “Pre-order from PlayStation Store”. Below them is the Ultimate Edition cover, with Jason, Lucia, a helicopter, a motorcycle, a speedboat and the GTA VI logo, and the copyright line “Grand Theft Auto VI © 2026 Rockstar Games”. The black X 18+ Restricted badge fills the bottom right corner.
On screen The “igta” wordmark above the title is the logo of iGrandTheftAuto.com, a GTA fan news site, which uses the same mark on its X account.
Our read The badge is the part that cannot be right for a game, since the category it shows does not exist for games in Australia. If the ad came from PlayStation, it went out with the wrong badge; Sony and Rockstar have not commented.
GTA 6’s real rating in Australia
Reported Rockstar has not announced an Australian classification for Grand Theft Auto VI. In 2023 an MA15+ listing under the game’s name, with consumer advice for “strong sex scenes and strong drug use”, appeared on the Australian Classification website; GamingBolt reported it at the time and noted that it was unknown whether the listing was genuine, a mistake or a placeholder.
Reported Grand Theft Auto V was rated R18+ in Australia, as GameSpot reported when it was classified in 2013.
Our read R18+ remains the likeliest rating for GTA 6 in Australia, in line with GTA V. A game cannot go higher than that and still be sold there.
What an R18+ rating would mean for players in Australia
Confirmed Australia’s new industry codes for age-restricted material, introduced through the eSafety Commissioner, came into effect on March 9, 2026. Under them, “online gaming platforms will require users to complete some form of age assurance to access games classified R18+”, ABC News reported on the day. App stores must take steps to stop users under 18 from buying or downloading R18+ apps, and breaches can cost up to A$49.5 million.
Reported Xbox already asks players in Australia to verify their age for R18+ games, God is a Geek reported in August 2026.
Our read If Grand Theft Auto VI is rated R18+ in Australia, players there should expect an age check on PlayStation and Xbox before they can buy it or play it online. The launch date does not change: GTA 6 comes out on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
